Orchid summer care: shading, ventilation, watering, and managing AC dryness to protect orchids from summer heat and humidity.
Most orchids grow beneath forest canopy dappled light and are weak in direct sunlight. Summer requires 50–70% shade. Phalaenopsis and paphiopedilum need higher shade levels, while cattleya and dendrobium can tolerate somewhat more light. Use shade netting or shade cloth.
Insufficient shading causes yellowing or brown burn spots. Conversely, excessive shading impairs photosynthesis, slowing new growth and reducing next year's flowering. Determine appropriate shade percentage by species, using leaf temperature (not hot to touch) as a gauge.
Summer heat and humidity create ideal conditions for bacterial and fungal diseases in orchids. The most effective prevention is ensuring ventilation. Open windows for natural airflow or use circulators. Stagnant air dramatically increases soft rot and black spot risk.
Early disease symptoms include water-soaked soft spots on leaves and rapidly spreading black spots. Immediately excise affected areas with clean scissors and apply fungicide. Acting before infection spreads minimizes damage.
Summer watering should be done in the morning, allowing roots to partially dry by evening. Roots remaining wet overnight invite root rot in hot, humid conditions. For sphagnum moss plantings, water when the surface dries; for bark plantings, water somewhat more frequently.
Orchid roots prefer air, so watering intervals should follow the "wait until media dries" principle. With clear pots, root color indicates timing—green roots have moisture; silver-white roots need water.
Air-conditioned rooms may cause excessive humidity drops. Orchids prefer 50–70% humidity—place humidity trays (saucers with water and pebbles) beneath pots or use humidifiers. Avoid placing orchids in direct AC airflow.
Grouping orchids together creates mutual transpiration that raises surrounding humidity. Regular leaf misting prevents surface dryness while removing dust, but avoid evening misting as it can cause disease.
Many orchids are in their growing season during summer. Promote new growth and pseudobulb development with diluted liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Dilute to half the recommended concentration for safety. Excessive fertilizer concentration damages roots—"dilute and frequent" is the orchid fertilizing principle.
Post-flowering plants build nutrient reserves during summer for autumn bud formation. For weakened plants, withhold fertilizer and prioritize root and leaf recovery first.
