A thorough comparison of leopard gecko and crested gecko: difficulty, cost, lifespan, and temperament.
Among geckos, the Leopard Gecko (Leo) and Crested Gecko (Crestie) are especially popular. Both are considered beginner-friendly, but their keeping styles are quite different.
Leopard Gecko: ★★☆☆☆ (Fairly Easy) Terrestrial species where temperature management is key. Create a hot spot with a heat mat and maintain a temperature gradient of 25-30°C. Feed mainly live or frozen insects like crickets and mealworms.
Crested Gecko: ★★☆☆☆ (Fairly Easy) Arboreal species requiring a tall enclosure. Can be kept at room temperature 20-27°C (AC required in Japanese summers). Main diet is commercial powdered food (Repashy, etc.) — a major advantage is no live food required.
| Item | Leopard Gecko | Crested Gecko | |------|---------------|---------------| | Total Length | 20-25cm | 15-20cm | | Lifespan | 10-15 years | 15-20 years | | Weight | 50-80g | 35-55g |
Leopard Gecko: Animal 3,000-30,000 yen + Equipment 20,000-40,000 yen = Total 23,000-70,000 yen Crested Gecko: Animal 5,000-50,000 yen + Equipment 15,000-35,000 yen = Total 20,000-85,000 yen
Leopard Gecko: Those comfortable with live food, those who enjoy watching cute terrestrial movements, those interested in morph (color variation) collecting.
Crested Gecko: Those who prefer to avoid live food, those who like arboreal geckos, those who want to watch them cling to walls. Minimal winter heating is also appealing.
