Training should begin as soon as you bring your puppy home. The period from 3-12 weeks of age is called the "socialization window," and experiences during this time profoundly shape a dog's lifelong temperament. Take it slow and make it fun.

Potty Training

Potty training should be your first priority.

Keys to Success - Watch for timing: Always take your puppy to the potty spot after waking up, after meals, and after play - Designate a consistent spot: Using the same location helps the puppy learn - Praise immediately: Timely praise is crucial - Never scold accidents: Scolding leads to hiding. Simply clean up quietly - Set up the environment: Lay potty pads widely before giving the puppy free roam

Teaching Basic Commands

Sit 1. Hold a treat near the puppy's nose and guide it backward 2. When the bottom touches the floor, say "sit" and praise 3. Repeat to connect the word with the action

Stay 1. With the puppy sitting, say "stay" and hold your palm up 2. Start with 1-2 seconds and gradually increase 3. Praise and give a treat for staying

Come 1. Crouch down at a distance, call the puppy's name and say "come" 2. Give lots of praise when they come 3. This is the most important command (it can save them from danger)

Socialization

The socialization window (3-12 weeks) is the best opportunity to expose your puppy to various experiences.

• Various people: Men, women, children, people wearing hats or glasses
• Various sounds: Vacuum cleaners, TV, thunder, car noises
• Various places: Parks, pet stores, friends' homes
• Other dogs: Puppy parties in safe environments are recommended

Preventing Chewing and Ingestion

Puppies explore the world with their mouths. Keep dangerous items out of reach.

• Dangerous items: Electrical cords, medications, cigarettes, toxic houseplants
• Redirecting chewing: Provide appropriate chew toys and redirect when they chew forbidden items
• Use a playpen: Keep puppies in a playpen when unsupervised to prevent accidents

Timing Is Everything

The golden rule of training is to praise the instant the desired behavior occurs. Praising even 3 seconds late fails to communicate what was done right. Building positive experiences is the foundation of good training.
