Symphysodon spp.
The 'King of Tropical Fish.' A disc-shaped cichlid with delicate coloration and graceful movement. Demands strict water quality — warm, soft, slightly acidic water. Many captive-bred strains.
The discus (Symphysodon spp.) is a large cichlid native to the Amazon River basin in Brazil, widely regarded as the 'King of Tropical Fish.' Its disc-shaped, laterally compressed body — reaching 15–20 cm in diameter — combined with spectacular coloration ranging across reds, blues, browns, and greens with intricate striped patterns, makes it one of the most visually impressive freshwater fish. Discus demand exceptional water quality: very soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, GH 1–4) closely resembling the blackwater streams of the Amazon, with RO water often recommended. Water temperature should be maintained at 28–30°C, making them suitable tankmates for heat-tolerant species such as Corydoras sterbai. They are social fish that benefit from being kept in groups of five or more. Diet consists primarily of high-protein discus hamburger or premium pellets. During breeding, pairs establish territories and care devotedly for eggs and fry; newly hatched fry feed on a mucus secreted from the parents' skin — a remarkable and rare behavior in freshwater fish.
