Paracheirodon innesi
The quintessential tropical fish. Beautiful neon blue and red coloring. Stunning when kept in schools. Hardy and beginner-friendly.
The neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is a small freshwater fish native to the blackwater and clearwater streams of the upper Amazon basin in South America. First described in 1936 by ichthyologist George S. Myers, it is one of the most widely kept tropical fish in the world. Its striking coloration — a brilliant metallic blue stripe running along the midline and a vivid red patch covering the rear half of the body — serves as a recognition signal among conspecifics in dark, tannin-stained waters. Growing to about 3–4 cm, neon tetras thrive in soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0) at temperatures of 22–28°C. They are peaceful schooling fish that display their best behavior in groups of ten or more. Compatible with other small, non-aggressive species, they should not be kept with large predatory fish. Omnivorous by nature, they accept a wide range of foods including high-quality flake food and frozen bloodworms. Breeding requires very soft, acidic water and dim lighting; eggs are scattered randomly among fine-leaved plants. Their hardiness, affordability, and stunning appearance make them the quintessential entry-level tropical fish.
