Neocaridina davidi
Small bright red freshwater shrimp. Excellent algae cleaner. Easy to breed and popular in planted tanks.
The cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) is a small freshwater shrimp native to Taiwan, widely regarded as the quintessential beginner shrimp in the aquarium hobby. Naturally brownish in the wild, selective breeding has produced a stunning array of color morphs — red (the namesake cherry), orange, yellow, blue, white, and more — making it the most traded ornamental shrimp in the world. Growing to 2–4 cm, cherry shrimp are excellent algae grazers that coexist peacefully with aquatic plants, making them ideal for planted tanks. They are relatively hardy, adapting to pH 6.5–7.5 and temperatures of 20–28°C. However, they are fatally sensitive to copper ions — any copper-based medication must be strictly avoided, and new plants should be thoroughly rinsed to remove pesticide residues. Breeding readily in established tanks, juveniles are independent immediately after hatching and can be raised alongside adults. Diet consists primarily of biofilm, algae, and fine powdered shrimp food, supplemented with blanched vegetables and sinking catfish tablets. Peaceful small fish like otocinclus make ideal tankmates; predatory or boisterous fish must be avoided.
