Nearly hairless guinea pig breed with warm, smooth skin. Requires careful temperature management due to lack of fur.
The Skinny pig is a nearly hairless guinea pig breed that originated from a spontaneous hairless mutation at a research institute in Canada in the 1970s. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 700–1,100 g. They are almost entirely bald, though most individuals retain small patches of hair on the muzzle, feet, and legs, allowing their skin's natural pigmentation patterns—ranging from pink to black to mottled—to be visible. The absence of fur significantly reduces their ability to thermoregulate, making a stable ambient temperature of 22–26 °C essential year-round. They are highly sensitive to drafts, cold floors, and direct sunlight. Their exposed skin is prone to dryness, abrasions, and dermatological infections; regular skin inspection and gentle moisturization are recommended. Diet requires unlimited timothy hay and daily vitamin C supplementation. Common health concerns include dermatological conditions, scurvy, and hypothermia. Lifespan is 3–5 years.
