Angora rabbit
Large rabbit with extremely long, fluffy wool-like coat. Strikingly fluffy appearance but requires daily grooming — for experienced owners.
The Angora rabbit is one of the oldest domestic rabbit breeds, originating in Ankara (historically called Angora), Turkey, and brought to Europe in the 18th century. Several Angora varieties are recognized by breed associations, including English, French, Giant, and Satin Angora. Adults measure 35–45 cm and weigh 2.5–5.0 kg. Their extraordinary long, silky wool coat—which can grow to 10 cm or more—has been harvested for textile production for centuries and remains commercially relevant today. Their temperament is generally calm and gentle; however, the extreme demands of their coat care make them unsuitable for inexperienced owners. Daily brushing is mandatory to prevent severe matting; neglected mats can lead to severe skin infections and wool block. Trimming every 2–3 months is essential. Due to their dense coat, they are especially sensitive to heat; temperatures should be kept below 22 °C. Common health concerns include wool block (hairball obstruction), dental malocclusion, and dermatitis. Lifespan is 7–12 years.
