Dorstenia foetida is native to rocky arid zones from southern Arabia to East Africa, belonging to the Moraceae family. The stem base is slightly swollen, with somewhat succulent stems bearing elongated leaves. Flowers are the characteristic flat, shield-like hypocrateriforms of the Dorstenia genus. The plant self-pollinates and forcibly ejects seeds, naturally spreading itself around the growing area—a charming trait that collectors enjoy. Growth is relatively fast and the plant stays small, making it space-efficient. Bright indirect light to full sun with well-draining soil is appropriate. Moderate watering during growth, avoiding overwatering, suits it well. It has reasonable cold tolerance and is among the more robust caudex plants.
