Deciduous tree with beautiful white bark. Captures the cool highland scenery in a small pot. Enjoy fresh green, yellow autumn leaves, and white trunk winter silhouette.
Betula platyphylla var. japonica, the Japanese white birch (Shira-kaba in Japanese), is a deciduous tree native to Hokkaido and the northern highlands of Honshu, as well as eastern Siberia. Its luminous white bark, which peels in thin papery sheets, is the defining characteristic — an iconic symbol of the cool highland landscapes of Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. In spring, the fresh pale green leaves emerge; in autumn, the foliage turns a clear golden yellow. In bonsai, the white bark and natural, graceful branching create a cool, airy composition evocative of highland scenery. Because it prefers a cool climate, summer heat management is the key challenge for cultivation in warmer regions.
