Root-dwelling plant from Southeast Asia. Many varieties with subtle beauty. May melt with environmental changes but recovers.
Cryptocoryne is a diverse genus of aquatic plants in the family Araceae, naturally distributed across tropical India, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea. The English common name 'water trumpet' derives from the distinctive trumpet-shaped spathe of their inflorescences. The genus offers extraordinary diversity in leaf shape and color — green, brown, red, and variegated forms abound — giving aquarists a wide palette for midground planting. Their broad shade tolerance and ability to thrive without CO2 supplementation make them suitable for virtually any planted tank setup. New introductions may experience 'Cryptocoryne rot,' a transient melting of leaves during acclimatization; plants reliably regenerate from intact roots. Once established in nutrient-rich aquasoil, they are extremely durable and long-lived.
