Reptile Enclosure Setup Guide: Layout & Equipment

A reptile's enclosure is their entire world. Proper setup is essential for maintaining health and encouraging natural behavior. Let's cover the fundamentals from equipment selection to layout.

Enclosure Selection Basics

Size Guidelines - Leopard gecko / Corn snake (under 60cm): 45×30cm minimum - Bearded dragon (adult): 120×60cm minimum - Ball python (adult): 90×45cm minimum - As a rule, provide floor space at least 1-1.5 times the animal's total length

Enclosure Materials - Glass: Great visibility, good heat retention, heavy - Acrylic: Lightweight, easy to handle, scratches easily - Wood (reptile-specific): Excellent insulation, suitable for larger species

Temperature Setup

Reptiles need a temperature gradient (hot spot and cool zone).

• Hot spot: Use an under-tank heater or heat lamp to warm one corner of the enclosure
• Cool zone: The opposite side should remain at a lower temperature
• Day/night variation: Set nighttime temperatures 5-8°C lower than daytime

For leopard geckos: Hot spot 30-32°C, cool zone 22-25°C as a guideline.

Lighting Equipment

• Diurnal reptiles (bearded dragons, chameleons, etc.): UVB lighting is essential for calcium metabolism and vitamin D3 synthesis
• Nocturnal species (leopard geckos, ball pythons, etc.): UVB not required. Lighting to establish day/night cycles is helpful
• Basking lamp: Used to create a hot spot
