Corydoras sterbai
Popular Corydoras variety with beautiful white dot pattern and orange belly. Known as a bottom-dwelling fish that eats leftover food from substrate, valued as a tank cleaner. Relatively tolerant of higher temperatures and easy to keep.
Corydoras sterbai is a medium-sized corydoras native to the Mamoré River basin straddling Brazil and Bolivia in South America. Growing to 6–8 cm, it stands out within the Corydoras genus for its exceptional coloration: a cream-white to gray base covered in a precise polka-dot pattern of dark spots, with vivid orange-yellow coloration on the pectoral fins, belly, and barbels — creating a uniquely eye-catching appearance. Its most significant practical advantage over other corydoras is heat tolerance: Corydoras sterbai can comfortably inhabit water up to 30°C, making it the go-to corydoras choice for discus aquariums and other high-temperature setups where other corydoras species would struggle. Slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) is otherwise appropriate. Fine, smooth sand substrate protects their sensitive barbels. Diet follows standard corydoras fare: sinking wafers, frozen bloodworms, and brine shrimp. Breeding follows the characteristic T-position spawn, with eggs deposited on glass or plant leaves. Peaceful, hardy, and widely available — sterbai is among the finest all-around corydoras species.
