Texel Guinea Pig

The Texel guinea pig is a long-haired, curly-coated breed developed in England in the 1980s through crosses between the Silkie guinea pig and the British Rex. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 800–1,200 g. Their defining characteristic is a full body coat of long, tight, corkscrew-like curls, most pronounced on the hindquarters and belly. The Texel's luxuriant, wavy coat has made it a highly sought-after show breed. Despite their elaborate appearance, their temperament is gentle and relatively calm. Coat care is demanding: the curls tangle very easily and require daily brushing. The hindquarters are particularly prone to soiling and must be checked and cleaned regularly. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay and daily vitamin C supplementation, as guinea pigs cannot synthesize it. Common health concerns include scurvy, hair ingestion leading to digestive issues, and skin infections. Lifespan is 4–7 years.
