Winter Goldfish Care — Cold Weather Protection Guide

Goldfish are relatively cold-tolerant fish, but are vulnerable to rapid temperature changes. Let's cover winter care points for both outdoor and indoor keeping.

Goldfish Cold Tolerance

Goldfish can survive water temperatures near 0°C. However, sudden rapid temperature changes cause significant stress and increase disease risk.

Outdoor Winter Care

• Maintain water depth of 30cm or more. Deeper water resists freezing, keeping goldfish safe at the bottom
• Surface freezing is fine as long as the bottom doesn't freeze
• Foam containers offer excellent insulation, well-suited for outdoor keeping
• Install wind barriers to moderate nighttime cold

Indoor Heater Management

• Winter care is possible without a heater, but a 15–18°C setting reduces goldfish stress
• Heated rooms create large day-night temperature swings. Minimizing temperature variation is important
• Window-side tanks require caution for nighttime cold

Winter Feeding

• Below 15°C: Reduce feeding to half
• Below 10°C: Digestive function essentially stops, so cease feeding
• If feeding, choose easily digestible small sinking pellets

Water Change Frequency

• Winter's reduced metabolism means less water contamination, allowing water changes to decrease to once or twice monthly
• Always temperature-match water for changes
