Goldfish are long-lived fish that can live 10+ years with proper care. However, neglecting water quality or exposing them to stress increases disease susceptibility. This article covers common goldfish diseases—symptoms, causes, treatments—and daily prevention strategies.

Common Diseases and Treatments

Ich (White Spot Disease)

The most common goldfish infection. Characterized by white grain-like spots on the body surface.

• Cause: Parasitic ciliate (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
• Symptoms: White spots on body and fins, rubbing against substrate or walls
• Treatment: Raise temperature to 28-30°C (speeds parasite lifecycle) + commercial ich medication (methylene blue or malachite green based)
• Important: Treat in a quarantine tank; thoroughly clean and water-change the main tank

Fin Rot / Mouth Rot (Columnaris)

A bacterial disease where fins or mouth area deteriorate and necrotize.

• Cause: Columnaris bacteria (proliferate in poor water quality)
• Symptoms: Fin edges turn white and dissolve. Mouth area becomes whitish (mouth rot)
• Treatment: Medicated bath with nitrofurazone/furazolidone compounds. Maintain temperature above 25°C
• Note: Early detection is crucial. Progresses rapidly—isolate and medicate immediately upon noticing symptoms

Swim Bladder Disease

A condition where the fish floats belly-up or sinks to the bottom. Complete cure is difficult, but management can prevent worsening.

• Cause: Swim bladder abnormality, constipation, digestive problems, genetic factors
• Symptoms: Floating at surface, sinking, tilted posture
• Treatment: Fasting (2-3 days), switch to easily digestible food (frozen bloodworms), maintain temperature at 25-27°C
• Prevention: Don't overfeed; choose pellets or frozen food over dry flakes. Pearlscale and Ranchu are especially prone

Dropsy (Pine Cone Disease)

A severe disease where scales protrude outward like a pine cone. Often accompanied by organ failure—treatment is difficult.

• Cause: Aeromonas bacterial infection (triggered by poor water quality)
• Symptoms: Protruding scales, abdominal swelling, protruding eyes
• Treatment: Medicated bath. Earlier detection means higher recovery rate
• Important: Terminal cases are untreatable. Early detection is the only strategy

Gill Disease

Gills fail to function normally, causing oxygen deprivation.

• Cause: Multiple factors—bacteria, parasites, poor water quality
• Symptoms: Gasping at surface, only gills moving, sluggish behavior
• Treatment: Varies by cause, but start with water change to improve quality. If symptoms persist, medicate

Daily Prevention

Regular Water Changes

The most effective prevention. Maintain weekly 1/3 water changes. Use a gravel vacuum to remove waste and uneaten food from the substrate.

Appropriate Stocking Density

Overcrowding is the biggest cause of water quality degradation and stress. Aim for at least 10-20 liters per fish.

Avoid Temperature Shock

Sudden temperature changes suppress immunity and increase infection susceptibility. Pay special attention to heater settings and water change temperature matching during seasonal transitions.

Quarantine New Fish

Before adding new goldfish to the main tank, quarantine in a separate container (even a bucket works) for 1-2 weeks. This is the most reliable way to prevent disease introduction.
