Goldfish compatibility guide: safe breed combinations, dangers of mixing slim and fancy types, size management, and spawning season tips.
Goldfish come in many varieties, and many hobbyists want to enjoy multiple types together in one tank. However, mixing goldfish breeds incorrectly leads to bullying, food monopolization, and injuries. This article explains compatibility by breed and the rules for safe community keeping.
The most important factor in goldfish compatibility is body type classification. Goldfish are broadly divided into "wakin-type (slim-bodied)" and "round-bodied (ryukin-type)" groups. Wakin-types have streamlined bodies and swim fast -- including wakin, comets, shubunkin, and Bristol shubunkin. Round-bodied types have globular bodies and swim slowly -- including ryukin, oranda, ranchu, telescope-eye, and azuma-nishiki. Mixing these two groups is the combination to avoid most. Round-bodied fish cannot keep up with wakin-types' fast swimming, failing to reach food and becoming malnourished, or being chased and weakened by stress.
Wakin-type community keeping is relatively safe. Wakin, comets, and shubunkin have similar swimming speeds and can actively coexist. However, watch for wakin nibbling at comet's long fins. Round-bodied community keeping is also generally safe, but watch for swimming ability differences. Ryukin with oranda works, but extremely slow swimmers like ranchu or bubble-eye goldfish (suihougan) may lose out on food when kept with the relatively faster ryukin. Telescope-eye goldfish have protruding eyes vulnerable to bumping or being pecked by other fish. Keep telescope-eyes only with their own kind or very gentle varieties.
Even within the same variety, large size differences cause problems. Larger individuals may chase smaller ones, and mouth-sized companions may be eaten. Keep body size differences within a 2x ratio. When adding new goldfish, select individuals of similar size to existing fish. Stocking density also affects community success. Overcrowding causes not only water quality deterioration but increased stress-driven aggression. A 60 cm tank comfortably holds 3-4 round-bodied or 2-3 wakin-type goldfish. Even with strong filtration, do not significantly exceed these numbers. Providing hiding spots with aquatic plants and driftwood allows chased individuals to seek refuge, reducing community stress.
During spring breeding season (water temperature 18-22°C), males aggressively chase females in "breeding tubercle behavior." This occurs regardless of breed, potentially exhausting females and causing surface injuries. Cross-breeding may occur between different varieties kept together. To maintain breed purity, separate males and females during breeding season. Breeding tubercles appear as white bumpy protrusions on males' pectoral fins and gill covers -- these signal the onset of breeding season. If chasing is severe, use tank dividers or move aggressive males to separate tanks.
Community keeping goldfish with other fish species is generally not recommended, though some species work under certain conditions. Loaches (dojo loach, striped loach) share similar temperature requirements and occupy different zones as bottom-dwellers, enabling relatively safe cohabitation. Pond snails are useful tankmates that eat algae. Tropical fish are generally incompatible due to temperature range differences. Goldfish thrive at 15-28°C while tropical fish need 24-28°C -- tropical fish cannot survive in unheated winter goldfish tanks. Medaka cohabitation risks goldfish eating medaka as they grow larger. Shrimp also become goldfish food, making them unsuitable tankmates.
For successful community keeping, selecting same-sized individuals acquired simultaneously is the key to success. On BriChoku, you can consult goldfish breeders about compatibility, and it is also possible to purchase multiple same-sized individuals from the same breeder. Use breeder experience to guide your combination choices and create a beautiful community tank.
