A deep crimson shrimp endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Beautiful with white spots scattered like stars.
The cardinal sulawesi shrimp (Caridina dennerli) is endemic to the ancient lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia — primarily Lakes Poso and Matano — and is considered one of the most visually stunning freshwater shrimp in existence. Growing to 2–3 cm, its deep crimson body is scattered with bright white spots, resembling a star-filled night sky in miniature — hence its evocative common name. Sulawesi's ancient lakes are geologically unique: the water is warm (28–30°C), moderately hard, and slightly alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5) — conditions dramatically different from the soft, acidic water preferred by most ornamental shrimp. Replicating these precise conditions using Sulawesi salt mixes and careful temperature control is the central challenge of keeping this species; soft or acidic water causes rapid decline and death. Diet consists of biofilm, fine algae, and specialized shrimp powders. Acutely sensitive to water parameter changes, copper, and chemical contaminants, they demand the highest level of care in the shrimp hobby. Their restricted endemic range and habitat vulnerability make responsible breeding and sourcing critically important.
