Pygmy possum
Tiny marsupial from Australia with large dark eyes and fluffy fur. Nocturnal, feeds on insects and nectar. Rare exotic pet.
Pygmy possums are a group of small marsupials in the family Burramyidae, native primarily to Australia with one species (the mountain pygmy possum, Burramys parvus) also occurring in alpine regions, and others found in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Adults measure 5–12 cm in body length with a prehensile tail of similar length, and weigh 10–45 g depending on species. They are nocturnal, arboreal nectarivores and insectivores, using their agile hands and prehensile tail to navigate vegetation while feeding on nectar, pollen, insects, and fruit. Some species enter seasonal torpor in colder months. Housing must be a tall, vertically oriented enclosure with branches, a hammock, and a nest box. Diet should replicate their natural intake: nectar supplements, live insects, and fruit. Optimal temperature is 22–28 °C. Specialized exotic veterinary care is important. Common health concerns include nutritional deficiencies, torpor complications, and stress. Captive lifespan is 3–5 years.
