Patagonian mara
Large South American rodent resembling a cross between a rabbit and a small deer. Forms strong monogamous pair bonds. Requires ample space.
The Patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum) is a large herbivorous rodent native to the open and semi-open habitats of Argentina, including the Patagonian steppe. Adults measure 60–75 cm and weigh 8–16 kg, making them the second largest rodent in South America after the capybara. Their long ears, hare-like face, and powerful hindlimbs give them an appearance combining features of rabbits and small antelopes. They are capable of running at speeds up to 45 km/h. Maras are monogamous and form lifelong pair bonds; they should be kept in bonded pairs and require very large outdoor enclosures of at minimum several dozen square meters. Diet is strictly herbivorous: quality grasses, hay, vegetables, and a small amount of rodent pellets. Optimal temperature is 15–28 °C. Specialized exotic veterinary care is essential. Common health concerns include obesity, dental disease, and parasites. Captive lifespan is 12–14 years.
