Raccoon family member with a long snout and banded tail. Curious, intelligent, and social but strong — for experienced owners.
Coatis (Nasua and Nasuella spp.) are medium-sized mammals of the family Procyonidae, native to South America, Central America, Mexico, and the southwestern United States. Adults measure 40–65 cm in body length with a long, ringed tail of 35–55 cm, and weigh 3–8 kg. Their most distinctive features are an elongated, flexible snout with an acute sense of smell and a long, mobile tail often held erect. In the wild, females and juvenile males form cohesive bands of up to 20 or more individuals, while adult males live solitarily. They are diurnal omnivores, foraging both on the ground and in trees. As pets, young coatis can be highly interactive and affectionate, but mature individuals often develop territorial and aggressive tendencies, requiring experienced exotic animal keepers. Housing must provide very large, secure outdoor space. Diet is omnivorous: fruits, insects, vegetables, and occasional animal protein. Optimal temperature is 20–28 °C. Captive lifespan is 15–20 years.
