Chinese Banyan

Ficus microcarpa, known as Chinese banyan, Indian laurel, or Malayan banyan, is an evergreen tree in the family Moraceae with a native range spanning from India through China, Japan, and Southeast Asia to Queensland, Australia. In Okinawa, it is revered as the dwelling place of forest spirits (Kijimunaa) and is considered a bringer of good fortune. The species is admired for its striking aerial roots that eventually merge with the trunk, creating a dramatic, sculptural silhouette even in pot cultivation. It prefers strong natural light and does best near a bright window. Water thoroughly when the soil dries, with more frequent watering during the growing season (spring to autumn) and reduced watering in winter. Fast-growing and responsive to pruning, making it easy to maintain a desired shape. Its unique form makes it a popular statement plant for interior spaces.
