Wrasse Care Guide — Popular Species & Sand-Diving Behavior Management

Wrasses are one of the most diverse and colorful groups in the marine aquarium hobby. Many species are reef-safe (harmless to corals), making them popular additions to reef tanks. This article covers wrasse selection, tank requirements, and care specifics.

Recommended Reef-Safe Wrasses

Fairy wrasses (Cirrhilabrus): Among the most popular reef-safe wrasses. Males display spectacular colors, especially during courtship. Peaceful toward corals and most tankmates. Most species reach 7-10 cm.

Flasher wrasses (Paracheilinus): Close relatives of fairy wrasses with similarly vivid coloring. Males perform dramatic "flashing" displays with extended dorsal fins. Very peaceful and reef-safe.

Possum wrasses (Wetmorella): Tiny, peaceful wrasses ideal for nano reef tanks. Shy but fascinating behavior, often hanging upside-down under ledges.

Six-line wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia): Hardy and attractive, excellent at controlling flatworms and small pests. Can become territorial in small tanks, however.

Wrasses That Are Not Reef-Safe

Larger wrasses in genera like Thalassoma, Coris, and Halichoeres may eat shrimp, snails, and small crabs. Some may disturb coral by moving substrate or rocks. Research each species carefully before adding to a reef tank.

Tank Requirements

• Sand bed: Many wrasses bury themselves in sand to sleep. Provide a 5-8 cm deep fine sand bed
• Cover: Wrasses are notorious jumpers. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is absolutely essential
• Swimming space: Most wrasses are active swimmers and need open water column space
• Hiding spots: Rock work with caves and overhangs provides security
• Peaceful tankmates: Avoid housing with aggressive species that may bully wrasses

Feeding

Most wrasses are carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates. Offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed 2-3 times daily, as wrasses have fast metabolisms. Garlic-enriched foods can help with initial feeding acceptance.

Acclimation

Wrasses are sensitive to shipping stress. Drip acclimate over 30-45 minutes. Keep lights dim for the first day. The fish may bury in sand and not emerge for 1-3 days -- this is normal behavior.
