Complete Equipment List for Saltwater Fish Keeping

Starting marine fish keeping requires specialized equipment different from freshwater setups. While the initial investment isn't cheap, proper equipment enables long-term stable keeping. Here's essential equipment listed by priority.

Essential Equipment

Tank

A 60cm or larger tank is recommended for marine fish. Larger water volume means more stable water quality. For beginners, a standard 60cm tank (approximately 60 liters) offers the best balance of cost and maintenance. Overflow systems provide superior filtration, but hang-on or canister filters work too depending on budget.

Lighting

Basic LED lighting is sufficient for fish-only setups. Full-spectrum marine LEDs are needed if keeping corals too. Many modern products allow smartphone control of intensity and color temperature.

Protein Skimmer

One of the most important devices in marine fishkeeping. It physically removes proteins and organic matter using bubble technology. This is marine-specific equipment not used in freshwater. Choose one matched to your tank size.

Heater/Chiller

Required to maintain water temperature at 24-26°C. Heaters for winter, chillers or cooling fans for summer. Integrated thermostat models are convenient.

Wavemaker

Provides appropriate water flow for marine fish and corals. Products that create randomized flow are recommended to simulate natural ocean conditions.

Optional but Useful Equipment

Refractometer

Measures saltwater salinity. Digital refractometers are most accurate, but floating hydrometers work as alternatives. Maintain specific gravity at 1.023-1.025.

Water Test Kit

Tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, KH, etc. Frequent testing is especially important during the initial setup period.

Synthetic Sea Salt Mix

Dissolved in tap water to create saltwater. Choose quality brands (Red Sea, Instant Ocean, etc.). An RO/DI water purifier is even more ideal.

Auto Top Off (ATO)

Since saltwater evaporation leaves salt behind, evaporated water must be replaced with fresh water. An automatic top-off device makes maintenance much easier.
