Raising beetle and stag beetle larvae requires entirely different management from adult care. Proper substrate and temperature control can produce large, healthy adult insects.
For beetle larvae: Highly fermented oak (kunugi/konara) substrate. The darker the color, the easier for larvae to digest.
For stag beetles: Giant Stag Beetles and Hirata Stag Beetles thrive best on mushroom spawn blocks. Sawtooth and Miyama Stag Beetles prefer medium to highly fermented substrate.
Procedure: Moisten fresh substrate appropriately, carefully extract the larva from old substrate using a spoon, pack new substrate into the bottle (compact the bottom layer), place the larva on top, and let it burrow in on its own.
Beetles: Optimal 20–25°C. Above 30°C is dangerous.
Stag beetles (domestic species): Optimal 18–25°C. Giant Stag Beetles do best at 20–23°C.
Foreign stag beetles: Highland species (Hercules, etc.) 18–22°C; lowland species (Giraffe, etc.) 22–27°C.
When the larva turns yellowish and becomes sluggish, it has entered the pre-pupal stage. Once it begins constructing a pupal chamber, never change the substrate. After eclosion (emergence as an adult), leave it undisturbed for 1–2 weeks until the exoskeleton hardens. Wait for it to emerge on its own.
