Distinctive lion-like mane of fur around the head. Active, friendly small rabbit growing in popularity for its unique look.
The Lionhead rabbit is a relatively new breed originating in Belgium, created by crossing Swiss Fox and Belge d'Or breeds to produce a distinctive wool mane around the head. Adults measure 25–30 cm and weigh 1.3–1.7 kg. The characteristic 'mane'—a woolly ruff of longer hair encircling the head—comes in two forms: single mane (a thinner ring) and double mane (a fuller, more pronounced ruff). Lionheads are lively, curious, and often bond closely with their owners. Their compact size and striking appearance have made them increasingly popular. Grooming is a critical aspect of their care; the mane is prone to matting and requires brushing 2–3 times per week, or daily during shedding season. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay, species-appropriate pellets, and fresh vegetables. Common health concerns include wool block (hairball obstruction), malocclusion, and GI stasis. Lifespan is 8–10 years.
