Rosenberg's Stag Beetle

Allotopus rosenbergi, Rosenberg's golden stag beetle, is the most commonly available species in the Allotopus genus, native to the highland forests of Java. The entire body shines with a stunning golden metallic luster, and adults reach 40–75 mm in length. As a highland species, it is sensitive to heat; captive temperatures must be maintained at 18–24°C. High humidity is equally critical—the enclosure must remain consistently moist, as desiccation rapidly weakens and kills adults. Larval rearing requires reishi (Ganoderma) fungal wood or equivalent specialized substrate; standard fungal substrate bottles are generally insufficient. Egg-laying also requires appropriate fungal wood. Adults live approximately 3–6 months. Despite requiring specialized husbandry conditions—low temperature, high humidity, and specialized substrate—the species is considered the best introduction to golden stag beetles, and its breathtaking coloration makes it one of the most visually rewarding beetles in the hobby.
