The tree's name 'Ego' derives from the saponin-rich bitter bark and fruit, historically used by Japanese fishermen as a fish stupefacient. In bonsai, it is admired for the elegant hanging flowers and the fine branching that develops with age. The multiple-trunk (kabudachi) style is particularly popular, evoking natural woodland scenes.
