In the context of 'kusa-mono bonsai' (grass-style bonsai), these irises are planted in shallow water trays or on moss-covered slabs to evoke the atmosphere of a waterside landscape. The large, elegant flowers — in purple, violet, white, pink, and their combinations — appear in May to June and are among the most spectacular blooms in the bonsai calendar. Japanese water iris cultivation has a rich history; Hanashōbu alone has over 5,000 named cultivars developed across the Edo, Higo, and Ise regional traditions.
