Agave chiapensis
An agave from Chiapas, Mexico. Native to tropical to subtropical highlands, more adapted to humid conditions than most agaves. Broad, somewhat softer leaves. Prefers relatively warm environments.
Agave chiapensis is a medium-sized agave native to lowland and mid-elevation areas of Chiapas in southern Mexico, adapted to the warm, humid conditions of the region. Its bright green leaves are somewhat softer and broader than typical agaves, with relatively small marginal teeth. Mature rosettes reach 60–100 cm in diameter, forming a well-proportioned, attractive form. Adapted to the relatively warm climate of Chiapas, it has lower cold tolerance than many agaves—growth may be affected below 5°C. Conversely, it handles humid conditions well, making it relatively adaptable to Japan's humid summers. Still uncommon in the horticultural trade, it is treated as a rare species but is an intriguing option for collectors in warmer regions. Its bright leaf color adds welcome variety to any collection.
