How to propagate succulents: leaf cuttings, stem cuttings, division, and beheading for echeveria, haworthia, and sedum.
Succulents are relatively easy to propagate, making it an enjoyable activity even for beginners. Choose the right method for each species to grow your collection.
The optimal method for echeveria and sedum. Twist a leaf side to side, removing it cleanly from the base of the stem, then lay it on dry soil. Keep in a bright spot out of direct sunlight, and roots and tiny sprouts will emerge in 2–3 weeks. If the leaf base is crushed, it won't root, so remove carefully.
Suited for species that tend to grow long stems, such as aeonium and kalanchoe. Cut the stem with clean scissors, let the cut end dry for 2–3 days, then insert into dry soil. Drying prevents bacterial infection and significantly improves success rates.
Ideal for species that produce offsets, such as haworthia and sempervivum. Carefully detach offsets with roots from the parent plant, let the cut surface dry, then plant.
Effective for restoring etiolated echeveria. Cut the stem below the rosette, let the top dry, then plant. The remaining lower stem will also produce multiple new shoots.
