Cactus care basics: watering frequency, soil and pot selection, repotting steps, cold treatment for blooming, and recommended beginner species.
While often grouped together, cacti have distinct care needs that differ from other succulents. Understanding these differences is key to growing healthy, blooming cacti.
Most cacti need intense, direct sunlight -- more than typical succulents. A south-facing window or outdoor placement is ideal. Water thoroughly but infrequently: let soil dry completely between waterings. During winter dormancy (November-February), reduce watering to once monthly or less.
Use very well-draining cactus-specific soil mix with high mineral content (pumice, perlite, coarse sand). Standard succulent mixes may retain too much moisture. Choose pots with drainage holes -- terracotta is excellent for its breathability.
Many cacti require a cool, dry winter period (5-10°C) to trigger spring flowering. Without this cold treatment, they may grow but never bloom. Handle with thick gloves or folded newspaper to avoid spine injuries.
On BriChoku, find rare and unusual cacti from specialist growers who can advise on species-specific bloom-triggering conditions.
