Goldfish Breeding & Selection Guide — Spawning to Fry Culling

Goldfish breeding combines the joy of spring spawning with the art and science of selective culling to maintain breed quality.

Spawning Conditions

Temperature 18-22C after a cold winter period. 12-14 hours of light. Mature adults (2+ years) in good nutrition.

Egg Management

Transfer spawning material to separate containers. Add dilute methylene blue for fungus prevention. Maintain gentle aeration. Remove white infertile eggs promptly. Hatching takes ~5 days at 20C.

Fry Selection

First cull (2-3 weeks): Remove deformities and breed-inappropriate features. Second cull (1-2 months): Select for body shape and fin form, keeping 20-30%. Third cull (3+ months): Evaluate color development and breed characteristics, keeping 5-10%.

Genetic Diversity

Outcross with unrelated same-breed fish every 3-5 generations to maintain vigor.
