Most caudex plants follow a "summer-type" growth cycle, actively growing from spring through autumn with leaf expansion and vigorous development, then dropping leaves and entering dormancy in winter. Japan's summer heat provides ideal growing conditions for these plants, and with proper management, surprisingly dramatic growth is achievable in a single season. Major Summer-Type Species

Summer-type caudex plants encompass many species. Here are the most popular genera.

Pachypodium, native to Madagascar, is the quintessential summer-type genus. Gracilius (with its charmingly round caudex) is the most popular species. Brevicaule creates an even flatter caudex and is a collector's dream rarity. Lamerei and geayi are large African pachypodiums with distinctive tree-like forms.

Resume watering only after confirming new growth. Starting water before shoots appear risks root rot from wet soil around inactive roots. Begin with small amounts, gradually increasing volume and frequency.

Move outdoors only after frost risk has passed (late April to early May in Kanto). Avoid sudden environmental changes -- spend the first week in semi-shade, gradually acclimating to full sun.

Begin fertilizing after new leaves unfurl. Pre-growth fertilization is pointless, merely accumulating in soil. Start with dilute liquid fertilizer in small amounts, increasing to normal concentration as growth intensifies.

Maximizing Growth in Midsummer

July-August peak summer is when summer-type caudex plants grow most vigorously. Management during this period determines annual growth.

Watering during peak season: water as soon as soil dries. High temperatures and active transpiration accelerate soil drying -- watering every 2-3 days is common. However, adequate soil aeration is a prerequisite.

Maximize sunlight. Most Pachypodium and Adenium species thrive in full midsummer sun, and insufficient light slows caudex thickening. However, on extreme heat days exceeding 40°C, pot interiors can overheat and damage roots. Black pots particularly absorb heat -- shade the pot or use white pot covers.
