Parrot Enrichment & Training Guide — Mental Stimulation for Large Parrots

Large parrots possess exceptional intelligence, and insufficient stimulation causes feather plucking, excessive screaming, and aggression. Proper enrichment is non-negotiable.

Foraging Enrichment

Foraging toys with hidden treats (start easy, increase difficulty), paper-wrapped pellets, skewered fruits and vegetables, scattered pellets for floor searching.

Trick Training

Target training: Bird touches beak to target stick for reward — foundation for all other tricks. Step-up: Essential command for hand-perching. Tricks: Turn, wave, shake hands — 5-10 minute sessions, 2-3 times daily.

Problem Behavior Prevention

Feather plucking: Address boredom, stress, and nutritional deficiency through enrichment and diet improvement. Excessive screaming: Reinforce quiet behavior, not screaming. Aggression: Maintain consistent training through adolescence (1-3 years).
