Abyssinian Guinea Pig

The Abyssinian guinea pig is one of the oldest recognized guinea pig breeds, distinguished by its unique coat of rosettes—swirling whorls of hair that radiate outward from a central point. A show-quality Abyssinian should have 8–10 symmetrically arranged rosettes. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 800–1,200 g. Their personality tends to be lively, curious, and somewhat more assertive than other guinea pig breeds, making them entertaining and engaging pets. Like all guinea pigs, they are unable to synthesize vitamin C and must receive daily dietary supplementation through foods such as bell peppers, broccoli, or kale. Housing should accommodate their social nature; keeping two or more guinea pigs is strongly recommended for their psychological well-being. Common health concerns include scurvy, dental disease, respiratory infections, and dermatological issues. Lifespan is 4–7 years.
