Kotei (Red Emperor) medaka is a further improved variant of Youkihi, featuring an even deeper and more intense crimson-vermilion body color. The name evokes the overwhelming red presence of an emperor. Outdoor keeping with ample sunlight deepens the color further, and pairing with carotenoid- and astaxanthin-rich color-enhancing food produces particularly vivid coloration. Care requirements are similar to Youkihi — neutral to slightly alkaline water, 5–30°C. Dark containers and outdoor pots best showcase its color. Popular as a step-up variety from Youkihi.
