Clown Triggerfish

The clown triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum) is a large triggerfish of the family Balistidae native to tropical coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its dramatic markings — large white polka dots on a dark belly, a vivid yellow-orange mouth, and bright spots on the dorsal surface — give it a flamboyant, jester-like appearance that inspired its common name. Adults can exceed 50 cm in length, requiring a tank of 300 litres or more. Highly aggressive, it will bite and damage virtually any fish, crustacean, or piece of live rock it encounters; solitary keeping is strongly recommended. Its powerful jaws are adapted for crushing molluscs and crustaceans in the wild, but it also accepts prepared aquarium foods readily. Despite its belligerence toward tankmates, it often develops a recognizable, individual personality with its keeper.
