Torch Coral

Torch coral (Euphyllia glabrescens, family Euphylliidae) is a large-polyped stony coral whose long, sweeping tentacles terminate in rounded tips resembling burning torches. Native to reef slopes of Fiji, Indonesia, and Australia, its tentacles come in green, tan, gold, and purple, with potent cnidocyte-tipped ends capable of stinging neighboring corals. In aquaria, moderate lighting (150–250 PAR) and gentle indirect flow allow the tentacles to sway gracefully; strong direct flow causes retraction. Stable alkalinity is critical, as sudden parameter shifts stress this species. Occasional target feeding with small meaty foods enhances health and coloration.
