Momordica Rostrata

Momordica rostrata is native to dry regions of East to southern Africa in the Cucurbitaceae family. Its caudex is covered in distinctive white to pale gray bark-like skin with a rough texture. Twining stems with divided leaves emerge from the caudex. Small white to yellow flowers are followed by striking red to orange fruits that are ornamentally appealing but toxic and should not be consumed. Growth is vigorous during the growing season, as expected for a cucurbit. Full sun to bright partial shade with well-draining soil is appropriate. Generous watering from spring through autumn gives way to complete drought in winter. It is somewhat frost-sensitive.
