Kumquat Bonsai

Fortunella japonica and F. margarita, commonly known as kumquat or kinkan (Kinkan in Japanese), are evergreen citrus shrubs native to southern China, cultivated in Japan since before the Edo period. Unlike other citrus, kumquats are eaten whole — skin and all — with a unique combination of sweet skin and tart flesh. In bonsai, kumquats are valued for the long-lasting, decorative display of their small, oval, bright orange fruits, which ripen in winter and remain on the tree for months. The glossy evergreen foliage provides year-round visual interest. Among citrus used in bonsai, kumquat is particularly valued for its relative cold-hardiness (tolerating approximately -5°C) compared to other citrus species.
