Ficus microcarpa (often called Gajumaru in Okinawa, or Chinese banyan) is an evergreen tropical tree in the family Moraceae, native to Okinawa, southern Kyushu, Southeast Asia, and Australia. It is celebrated for its extraordinary aerial root system, in which roots descend from branches and form additional trunk-like pillars upon touching the soil. In Okinawa, it is considered the dwelling of a forest spirit called 'Kijimuna' and is culturally venerated. In bonsai, the naturally sculptural root formations and aerial roots create highly individual compositions. Its adaptability to indoor conditions and forgiving nature make it one of the most popular beginner bonsai species worldwide.
