Lespedeza species, commonly known as bush clover or Hagi in Japanese, are deciduous shrubs in the legume family native to Japan, China, the Korean Peninsula, and North America. Hagi is one of the 'Seven Autumn Grasses' (Aki no nanakusa) celebrated in classical Japanese poetry since the Man'yoshu anthology. In August to October, slender, arching branches become laden with masses of small purple-pink (occasionally white) pea-shaped flowers. In bonsai, the cascading (kengai) style is most popular for this species, with flowering branches draping gracefully over the pot edge. The plant regenerates vigorously from the base each spring after hard pruning, making it relatively easy to maintain and shape.
