Thread Agave

Agave filifera, native to the states of Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, and Durango in Mexico, is recognized by the white thread-like fibers that peel away from the margins of its dark green, lance-shaped leaves. The species name 'filifera' means 'thread-bearing.' Mature rosettes typically reach 40–60 cm in diameter. Growth is slow, and flowering takes 10–20 years. It performs best in full sun but tolerates bright partial shade. Watering should be conservative; the plant is susceptible to root rot, so a well-draining soil mix is essential. Reduce watering to about once a month during winter. Cold hardiness is moderate, surviving down to about 5–8°C. The decorative fibers and relatively compact size make it a popular choice in collections. It offsets readily, making propagation straightforward. Together with Agave geminiflora and A. leopoldii, it forms an informal group known as the 'thread agaves' among Japanese enthusiasts.
