Basics of Combining Varieties

Combining species with similar growing conditions is the most important principle.

Spring/Fall growers (active in spring and fall): Echeveria, Sedum, Graptopetalum Summer growers (active in summer): Kalanchoe, Agave Winter growers (active in winter): Lithops, Conophytum

Avoid mixing spring/fall types with winter types since their watering schedules conflict.

Color & Design Tips

• Group similar colors: Green gradients are forgiving and hard to get wrong
• Use complementary colors: Green and red-purple contrasts create striking displays
• Create height variation: Taller varieties in the center, shorter ones in front
• Plant in odd numbers: 3, 5, or 7 plants look most natural
• Fill gaps with Sedum

Container & Soil Selection

Containers with drainage holes are essential. Unglazed terracotta pots offer the best breathability. Use commercial succulent potting mix for convenience. For custom blends, try a 3:2:1 ratio of akadama, kanuma, and pumice.

Planting Steps

1. Remove plants from nursery pots and gently shake off old soil
2. Add soil to the container and position the main plant first
3. Use tweezers to place smaller plants in gaps
4. Fill soil firmly between plants
5. Wait 1 week before watering after planting

Ongoing Care

• Watering: Only after soil is completely dry. Every 2–3 weeks is typical
• Location: Bright, well-ventilated spot
• Fertilizing: Dilute liquid fertilizer once a month in spring and fall
• If plants stretch (etiolate): This signals insufficient light. Move to a brighter location
