Spring aquarium maintenance guide: heater removal timing, algae prevention, filter cleaning, and plant trimming tips as temperatures rise.
Why Spring Aquarium Maintenance Matters
The winter-to-spring transition brings major changes to aquarium environments. Rising water temperatures increase livestock activity and algae growth risk. Proper maintenance now prevents summer problems and maintains stable year-round conditions.
Heater Removal Timing
Remove heaters cautiously:
- Wait until room temp consistently stays above 20°C: March still has morning/evening chills -- don't rush
- Target mid-April to early May: Once minimum temperatures no longer drop below 15°C
- Gradually lower set temperature: Reduce by 1°C per week rather than abruptly removing
- Keep as backup: Store where you can reinstall quickly for rainy-season cold snaps
Tropical fish note: For species preferring warm water (discus, Apistogramma), keep heaters until room temperature exceeds 25°C.
Spring Algae Control
Longer daylight and warmer water make spring prime algae season.
Algae Types and Solutions
- **Brown algae (diatoms)**: Especially common in early spring. Otocinclus and Nerite snails are effective. Limit lighting to 6--8 hours
- **Green algae**: Thin green film on glass. Remove with scraper; increase water change frequency
- **Hair algae**: Wraps around plant leaves. Amano shrimp are most effective. Reduce phosphates by adjusting feeding
- **Cyanobacteria**: Blue-green with slimy texture. Improve substrate flow and increase aeration
Prevention
1. Timer-control lighting to 8 hours or less
2. Block direct sunlight with curtains or blinds
3. Continue weekly 1/3 water changes
4. Feed only what livestock consume in 2--3 minutes
Filter Cleaning
Clear out winter buildup:
- Canister filters: Clean hose interior biofilm with pipe brushes. Rinse media gently in tank water only (tap water kills beneficial bacteria)
- Hang-on filters: Replace filter wool; rinse bio-media in tank water
- Sponge filters: Squeeze in tank water. If worn, replace half at a time
- Under-gravel filters: Vacuum substrate with a gravel cleaner. Do 1/3 of substrate at a time over 3 weeks
Critical: Never clean filters and do large water changes simultaneously. Risk of crashing bacterial balance. Space at least 1 week apart.
Plant Trimming and Fertilization
Spring accelerates aquatic plant growth.
- Trimming: Stem plants often become leggy over winter. Cut aggressively and replant healthy tops
- Remove dead leaves: Clear winter-damaged foliage to encourage new growth
- Fertilization timing: New shoot emergence signals time to start. Use root tabs for rooted plants; liquid fertilizer for floating and epiphytic plants
- CO2 review: Rising temperatures reduce CO2 solubility, potentially requiring dosage adjustment
- Light increase: Extend photoperiod by 30--60 minutes for growth season (monitor for algae)
Livestock Health Check
Carefully assess animals that made it through winter:
- Body surface: White spot disease (Ich) often appears during temperature fluctuations. Check daily for white dots
- Appetite: Activity and appetite increase with temperature. If no food remains, gradually increase portions
- Behavior: Listlessness or body-rubbing against objects may indicate parasites. Early treatment is key
- Breeding signs: Rising temperatures may trigger spawning behavior. Prepare fry isolation if needed
