Basic Principles of Enclosure Selection

Key points common to all small animal enclosures:

• Bigger is better: Ensure enough space for the animal to move freely
• Escape prevention: Check gap sizes and door lock mechanisms
• Easy cleaning: Removable bottom trays and wide-opening doors simplify maintenance
• Good ventilation: Metal mesh and similar breathable materials are preferred (sealed enclosures overheat easily)

Hamster Housing

Hamsters are typically kept individually. They have a strong territorial instinct, and keeping multiple hamsters in one cage leads to fighting.

• Enclosure size: Minimum floor space of 60×40cm
• Bedding: Paper-based or wood chip bedding, 5-10cm deep (deep enough for nest building)
