Winter Rose & Flower Care — Cold Weather Protection Guide

Winter is an important season of dormancy and preparation for roses. Proper winter pruning and dormant-season fertilizing will produce beautiful blooms in spring.

Winter Pruning: Method and Timing

• Perform winter pruning in January to February. The best timing is before buds begin to swell
• Cut the entire bush to 1/3 to 1/2 its height. Make cuts at a 45-degree angle about 5 mm above an outward-facing bud
• Remove dead, thin, and inward-growing branches to improve air circulation
• Apply wound sealant to cut surfaces to prevent disease entry

Dormant-Season Fertilizing

• Apply organic fertilizer at the same time as winter pruning
• Work compost mixed with rapeseed meal and bone meal into the soil slightly away from the base of the plant
• Dormant-season fertilizing is a nutrient reserve to support spring growth. Apply generously

Cold Protection in Cold Regions

• Spread a thick layer of bark compost or straw (10 cm or more) around the base to prevent root freezing
• In areas with strong cold winds, wrap the entire plant with burlap or garden fleece
• In snowy areas, support branches with stakes to prevent breakage

Container Rose Care

• Container roses are more susceptible to root freezing than in-ground plants, so move them to sheltered, wind-free locations
• Placing pots inside styrofoam boxes provides insulation
• Water when the soil is dry, but sparingly. Don't let the soil dry out completely

Winter Pest and Disease Prevention

• Fallen leaves harbor black spot disease fungi, so always clean up fallen leaves around the base
• Applying lime sulfur spray in winter reduces overwintering pests and pathogens
