Advanced Ranchu Breeding & Selection Guide for Show Quality

Ranchu, the 'King of Goldfish,' represents the pinnacle of goldfish breeding with its rich show culture and demanding selection process.

Parent Selection

Choose healthy 2-3 year old fish. Males show breeding tubercles on pectoral fins and gill covers. Females should have well-developed ovaries. Use unrelated bloodlines.

Artificial Spawning

Show-quality breeding uses artificial fertilization: gently express eggs from the female into a bowl, add milt from the male, mix gently, add clean water, and attach fertilized eggs to spawning frames.

Fry Culling

The heart of ranchu breeding. First cull (2 weeks): Remove fish with dorsal fins and major deformities. Second cull (1 month): Select for tail shape and body balance. Third cull (2-3 months): Evaluate head growth (wen) development and color. Keep only 5-10% of total fry.

Wen Development

High-protein diet, warm water (25-28C), frequent water changes, and regular bloodworm/brine shrimp feeding promote wen growth.
