Feeding is one of the most important daily routines in goldfish care, alongside water quality management. Proper food selection and portion control are key to keeping goldfish healthy for years.

Types of Goldfish Food

There are various types of commercially available goldfish food:

• Flake type: Floats easily on the surface and is easy to digest. Good for beginners
• Pellet type: Available in sinking and floating varieties. Sinking pellets are effective for swim bladder disease prevention
• Gel food: Less water pollution and excellent digestibility
• Live food: Bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp. Highly palatable and effective before breeding season
• Freeze-dried food: Dried bloodworms and daphnia. Easier to manage than live food

Daily Feeding Amount and Frequency

Overfeeding is the number one cause of water quality deterioration. Use the following guidelines:

• Amount: Enough to be consumed within 5 minutes (approximately 1–3% of body weight)
• Frequency: Twice daily (morning and evening) is standard
• In cold water (below 15°C): Reduce to once daily or less as digestive function decreases
• Below 10°C: Feeding can be virtually stopped (goldfish can withstand fasting)

Foods to Avoid

• Human foods like bread or rice
• Vegetables with pesticide residue
• Spoiled or expired food (store opened packages in a cool, dark place and use within 3 months)

Feeding Tips by Variety

• Wakin/Comet: Active swimmers, standard portions are fine
• Ryukin/Pearlscale: Choose sinking pellets to prevent swim bladder disease
• Ranchu: Feed at water temperatures around 25°C for optimal digestion
• Telescope Eye: Their poor eyesight means food that sinks too far may not be found
